BENEŠ OF TRNIČÍ‘S COAT OF ARMS
On the second floor of the tower at Sankturin House, in the centre of the apex of the roof vault, there is a stone coat of arms with barely distinguishable remnants of red and blue pigment polychromy. The gilded mane and the parade crest on top of the helmet are secondary. The original colour version of the coat of arms is mentioned in the historical building survey of 1965 conducted by the renowned Czech historian Dobroslav Líbal, in which he referenced heraldic sources. Records of original royal privileges, with descriptions of coats of arms of Bohemian and Moravian noble families, are elaborately presented in the remarkable Bohemian-Moravian Heraldry (Sedláček, Kolář) of 1902. Similarly, the description of Beneš of Trničí’s coat of arms can be found in Great Armorial – Encyclopaedia of Families and Coats of Arms in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown (Mysliveček) of 2006. Another source is Otto’s Encyclopaedia.
The coat of arms is described thus: ‘The centrepiece is a shield. The right half of the shield has half of a white eagle on it, with gilded talons and a golden collar around its neck upon which a bell hangs. The left half of the shield is red with three diagonal white stripes across it, running from the right side upwards to the centre. A helmet with a parade crest shaped like wings — the right wing blue and the left wing red — rests on top of the shield. A mane flows from below the crest and extends outwards, down either side of the shield — blue and gold to the right and red and silver to the left.’ The sides of the coat of arms are always described in heraldry from the point of view of the shield bearer, not from the point of view of the observer standing in front of the shield. The current artistic reconstruction of the original form of the coat of arms was made in May 2024 by Renata Cziroková, who was assisted by Tomáš Honz. In addition, valuable advice during the renovation was contributed by heraldist PhDr. Zdeněk Kubík.
The only known colour reproduction of the coat of arms before 2024 appears in Mysliveček’s Great Armorial, but this contains errors. Lower-ranking ‘modern’ noble families were only allowed to use a jousting shield and jousting helmet, unlike older noble families, who had a Gothic shield and a semicircular or a broken arch in their coat of arms. Then there was a tournament helmet with bars in the visor. Mysliveček also used a twisted rope at the interface between the helmet and the jewels in his depiction. But this does not appear in either the records of royal privileges or in the sculpted version the coat of arms dating from 1492 that was created by master stonemason Briccius Gauske, who designed and carved the entire vault in Sankturin House.
It is true that the tournament helmet appears on George of Trničí’s coat of arms from 1547 in the main nave of St Barbara’s Cathedral, which was likely an interpretation by the artist commissioned to paint it. Interestingly, there is another version of the coat of arms of the esquires of Trničí dating from 1701 — found in the vault above the chancel, just beyond the boundary between the altar area and the main nave — that lacks the helmet and mane.
